At the mine Museum |
This last weekend a few friends and I were fed up with all the rain in western Washington, so we decided to take a 5 hour drive over to Winthrop and stay at my families vacation home. As expected the weather was fantastically dry and the sun was out to play! On saturday we spent the majority of the day walking around downtown Winthrop, shopping at the little trinket stores and exploring the mine museum. We finished the day off by grabbing some grub and beers at the brewery in town. Just as we were leaving on Sunday, the rain began to fall. What perfect timing! If you've never been to Winthrop it is a very friendly town with lots to explore. http://www.winthropwashington.com/
Was Winthrop a mine boom town? I am surprised that it has a website for tourism usually those little downs are somewhat derelict.
ReplyDeleteIt started as a mine boom town way back in the day, but now that all of the mines in the area are closed, it still remains as a tourist "old western" town, complete with a wooden boardwalk up one side and down the other side of town. It is the first large town you come across when driving east over the north cascades highway.
ReplyDeleteNice find! What are some other nearby-ish place for little weekend trips like this? Any suggestions for day hike places?
